How do I mend lace on my dress?
I have a dress with a polyester "slip" and lace covering it. It has about a one inch tear in the lace. Without a sewing machine, what is the best way to mend it?
It's not a strongish lace. It doesn't even have to be perfect. Any mending will be less noticeable than the tear. It is an inexpensive dress. I just want to make the tear less noticeable. Would fabric glue work? Would hand sewing with a needle and thread tear the lace more? It's only for one night.
Its a horrible thing to do. Very boring, time consuming and fiddly.
If its an expensive or very old or precious dress, I'd recommend having it mended professionally.
If its strongish lace, then (this is very hard to explain)
Cut off the two loose 'leg' bits that are torn. And then catch-stitch all the way up the tear in all the complete holes either side of the tear. You could also do single stitches but that will take a while.
Use thread the same colour and thickness as the lace.
Mended lace can still be noticable. Though its much better if the slips the same colour as the lace.
Its a lot easier if the lace is sewn to the slip, but I don't you probably don't want to do that. Which is the only way I know how to do it by machine.
To be honest. I'd probably try glue.
