Is it hard to sew a dress? How long would it take?
With a sewing machine? By hand? What materials do you need? How long would it take?
I have a dance recital coming up and we're supposed to wear red and white for our lyrical dance. I was thinking of sewing a dress to wear - am I crazy, or would that not be too hard?
Is it difficult to sew a dress? Not especially, but there is a lot of practice that goes into producing a good product. A simple dress from a pattern that has been fitted previously takes me about 4 hours, start to finish, but I sew pretty quickly. When I was just beginning, a similar project would have taken me weeks.
You've got at least three major hurdles to think of besides general sewing knowledge:
1) pattern (is there one available that can be used for the purpose?)
2) fit
3) fabric -- knowing what fabrics are easier or more difficult to sew is often difficult for beginners. "Silkies" and chiffons, organzas and georgettes, often used for dance costumes, can be difficult in inexperienced hands.
If you decide to do it, make sure you've got some backup expertise, and give yourself plenty of time. If you search here at yahoo answers, you'll note that some of the most frequent sewing questions are simple machine operation errors from beginners.
