What is avant-garde and what is the relationship of the avant-garde to mainstream or mass culture?
What is avant-garde and what is the relationship of the avant-garde to mainstream or mass culture? Refer to the arguments of Paul Wood.
(avant-garde: originally a military term. Now used for the notion that some people, especially artists, are more "advanced" than the rest of society, exploring ideas and experiences that others will only understand at a later date.)
Well, I don't intend to do your research for you but I can offer some insight on how avant-garde artists influence mainstream or mass culture.
1. Often they change the status quo
2. They open the eys of the public to the unconventional and the unusual
3. Ofter after an avant garde artist has been discovered their "odd" works of art become the norm in only a few years.
4. They broaden the definition of "what is art" and "what is creative" and "what is acceptable"
